Not all chain hardware is EQUAL!!!
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people using “Spring Links” for safety chain on trailers. They are so handy, easy to use, and pretty much WORTHLESS! For example … many people use 5/16 proof coil chain for safety chain. This size chain has a working load limit of 1900 lbs. Look at the load rating for 5/16 hardware:
5/16 Quick Link working load limit @ 1760 lbs
5/16 Repair Link working load limit @ 675 lbs
5/16 Cold Shut working load limit @ 1250 lbs
5/16 Connecting Link working load limit @ 1900 lbs
5/16 Screw Pin Shackle working load limit @ 1500 lbs
5/16 standard S Hook working load limit @ 140 lbs
5/16 Spring Link working load limit @ 507 lbs
Bottom line example ….. if you’re using chain rated at 1900 lbs and an attachment link rated at 507 lbs …… it isn’t going to do you much good if you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of needing to rely solely on the safety chains. They’re called safety chains and they are required for a reason.
