COIL CHAIN

We are often asked to make a recommendation in regard to what size chain to use for a job. That is a very hard question to answer from our side of the counter, and really should be looked at thru a designer/engineering pair of eyes. There are many factors and abuses that will lessen the load that the chain and related products will withstand. Some examples of such changes and abuses are as follows:

Tip loading of hooks

Twisting of the chain

Disfigurement

Deterioration of the component by strain, usage or corrosion

Impact loading (sudden loading)

Use in sharp corners without protection

Use in excess of working load limits

NEVER EXCEED TO WORKING LOAD LIMIT

Our standard Grade 30 proof coil chain has the following working load limit:

1/8   @ 375 lbs

3/16 @ 750 lbs

¼  @ 1250 lbs

5/16 @ 1900 lbs

3/8  @  2650 lbs

We also sell the Grade 70 Load Binder chain. This chain is plated with a yellow zinc and is primarily used for tying down heavy equipment on trailers.  We sell two sizes, and the come with a Grade 80 grab hook on each end.

5/16 x 20ft  has a 4700 lb rating

3/8 x 20 ft  has  a 6600 lb rating

And last but not least … as you add different hardware to your chain …. make sure you understand the load rating of the new hardware …. For example … you would not want to use a ¼” quick link ( 880 lb working load limit ) with  5/16”  proof coil chain ( 1900 lb working load limit )

Can you guess what the weak link is in this set up ??

THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD REVIEW

FROM ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS: I have been buying from Mark for 20 years now.For a few reasons great selection of fasteners and alot more hard to find items. For use around the home and business..You will find the best selection of stainless fasteners anywhere right under this roof.Along with many other fasteners.Plus tarp and shade needs. A good selection of small hand tools tap and die needs. Some electrical, hinges, etc etc.You simply need to make the first visit.Pricing is also better than any of the larger stores.IF you need help , you will have to ask.For the simple reason this is a small owner run store front. He runs a tight ship and in order to help get the better prices. He cant afford to hire more help than is just needed. You wont have to run all over like at home depot looking for anyone who could help you.At marks someone is easy to find.Just be patent when there always busy doing something or helping someone. My only complaint is the hours. But again you can only do so much. Meaning we all have our limitations. Great store and selection and prices check Marks out!

WHY ARE STAINLESS STEEL SELF-DRILLING SCREWS MAGNETIC?

We’ve had more than a few calls with questions why the stainless self-drilling screws are magnetic.  The customers reaction is that we sold them something that wasn’t stainless. That is a reasonable misconception. So, let’s clarify!  The self-drilling screws and even some sheet metal screws are made out of 410 stainless. Here is a brief explanation…..

Grade 410 Bright Hardened Stainless Steel used in self-drilling (Tek) screws intended for steel substrates is a Martensitic alloy containing 12% chromium but no nickel. It is therefore somewhat less resistant to corrosive attack than the 300 Series grades. The reason for this is 300 series isn’t hard enough to keep a drill point. It is magnetic and is hardened by heat treatment which gives it the mechanical properties necessary to penetrate most metallic materials. It is recommended that these fasteners be used in thinner material. These fasteners are most popular for use in Aluminum.

It is also my understanding that the 410 stainless can be subject to a light surface rust (you see this a lot in marine cable ) but yet it is easily wiped off, and is not really considered a penetrating corroding rust.

Hope this helps!!!
